もうクリスマスもほぼ終わりだが…敢えて「クリスマス前夜」について。
"The Night Before Christmas"というのは、"A Visit from St. Nicholas"、'Twas the Night Before Christmas"などというタイトルでも知られる詩であり、19世紀初頭に作られたらしい。Wikiによると、その内容はこんな感じ。
On Christmas Eve night, while his wife and children sleep, a man awakens to noises outside his house. Looking out the window, he sees St. Nicholas in a sleigh pulled by eight reindeer. After flying on to the roof, the saint enters the house through the chimney, carrying a sack of toys with him. The man watches Nicholas filling the children's stockings hanging by the fire, and laughs to himself. They share a conspiratorial moment before the saint bounds up the chimney again. As he flies away, Nicholas wishes everyone a happy Christmas.
敢えて訳すまい。暖炉のストッキング、トナカイの引くソリにのり、煙突から入るサンタクロース…そう、要は、今の英語圏（とくにアメリカ？）、そしてそこから伝わった日本におけるサンタクロース(St. Nicholas)やクリスマスのイメージはすべて、この詩から生まれた、ということらしいのだ。
この詩からインスパイアされた映像作品や文学作品は数知れず…。
有名なTim Burtonの"The Nightmare Before Christmas"だってこの詩を意識して作られた作品らしい。ホウホウホウ。
さて、1950年代に作られた"The Spirit of Christmas"というショートフィルムである。まさにこの詩の世界観を"The Les ans Mabel Beaton marionettes"が表現したもので、操り人形というよりは、クレイアニメみたいな登場人物の動きがカワイイ。この映像を3分程度に編集したものに、どこかのだれかが、ジャンゴ・ラインハルトの演奏する"Christmas Swing"をのせてくれた。この小作品がとてもよくて、思わず繰り返し観ていたら、クリスマスが終わってしまった…。
